HeyUrdu App: Features, Price and How It Compares

HeyUrdu is a mobile app for learning to speak Urdu, made by Sumdora. It has 20 levels of short daily lessons where you say real phrases out loud, in Roman Urdu with the Urdu script, with two natural voices and Mithu the parakeet. It is free to start and coming soon to iPhone and Android.

How HeyUrdu works

  1. Pick your goal and level. A quick level check skips what you already know.
  2. Do a short lesson. About five minutes: listen, tap, then say each phrase out loud.
  3. Mithu checks you. Your phone's speech recognition checks what you said, word by word. If your phone can't check Urdu, you listen back and judge it yourself.
  4. Practise for real. Chat with Mithu in role-plays, take today's family challenge, and review phrases just before you'd forget them.

Questions people ask

Is the HeyUrdu app free?

Yes, HeyUrdu is free to start: one new lesson and one new chat every day, all accents and both voices, flashcards, daily review and Read Urdu. HeyUrdu Pro adds unlimited lessons and chats, a mistakes deck and no ads, with a 7-day free trial.

How much does HeyUrdu Pro cost?

Prices will be shown in the App Store and Google Play at launch, with a 7-day free trial on the yearly plan.

Where can I download the HeyUrdu app?

HeyUrdu is coming soon to the App Store (iPhone) and Google Play (Android). Only download it from those official stores.

Does HeyUrdu work offline?

Lessons and voice audio are stored on your phone, so most of HeyUrdu works without internet. Checking your speech uses your phone's speech recognition, which on some phones needs a connection.

How does HeyUrdu check my pronunciation?

It uses your phone's own speech recognition (from Apple or Google) to turn what you said into text and shows which words matched. HeyUrdu doesn't keep recordings.

Is HeyUrdu good for intermediate learners?

Yes. The level check skips what you know, and the later levels cover stories, opinions, debates, tone, humour and sounding natural.

Does HeyUrdu teach grammar?

HeyUrdu teaches through phrases rather than grammar lessons, with short plain-English notes when they help, like when words change for a boy or a girl.

Does HeyUrdu teach different Urdu accents and dialects?

Lessons teach the everyday Urdu everyone understands. "Urdu around the world" shows how Karachi, Lahore, Hyderabad (Deccan), Lucknow and Hindi say the same things.

Is HeyUrdu safe for children?

Yes. HeyUrdu asks for an age group, never a birthday. Under-13s never see ads from other companies, and nothing is tracked for advertising for anyone under 18.

Does HeyUrdu have live tutors or a community?

Not yet. HeyUrdu is a self-study app; you practise speaking with Mithu and with your family.

Does HeyUrdu give a certificate?

No. HeyUrdu focuses on everyday speaking rather than exams.
